I just read an article about how to do creative writing and not get distracted with the internet. A lot of stuff is pretty useful for any kind of writing. (i.e., research papers.) Personally, I tend to do a lot of research first, then write everything all at once and put in facts later. Cory Doctorow has the idea to write TK where you need to put a fact later. I like that a lot
If you're looking for a good distraction-free word processor, Bean is great. It has few features, and it's great if you're doing a first draft. Then, just cut and paste it into another program to edit/format it. I just stopped using Bean though and started using the full-screen mode in Pages 2009.
Also, if you're a Mac owner, Think is a great distraction stopping program.
