More studying tips...

Flush from having a famous blogger post a comment to another post, I've got another person's take on studying. It's actually a step-by-step process in this one and it's one I mostly try to emulate. (The link goes to a transcript. It makes more sense if you watch the video.)

Money-saving ideas for OSU students...

If you're a student at a college whose bookstore is Barnes & Noble, (like say, Ohio State,) here's a great idea for you. Go to Barnes & Noble's site and lookup your textbooks and add them to a wishlist.

Next, sign up for Giant Eagle's Advantage Card.

Next, buy Barnes & Noble gift certificates from Giant Eagle in the amount of your order and swipe your advantage card.

Now, as an added bonus to you OSU students, the books for NURS 622 cost $287.41.

You've just earned $1.20 off your next tank of gas.

Some podcasts...

I listen to a lot of podcasts, and one of my new favorites is one called the Get-It-Done Guy. He's got a series started this week that talks about what he calls, "moments of truth." Basically, it's how you have a few moments where everything comes together. (James Joyce called this an epiphany.) Anyway, he mentioned some stuff about learning in the last one and I thought I'd point it out.

Free MS Office...

It's actually a post about a replacement for MS Office, but it's still free. I mentioned it a long time ago, but I actually just started using it.

What is it? It's Zoho.com. It's a free on-line suite of productivity applications.

I'm going to be taking my notes with this the coming quarter. I've actually already switched the class notes over to Zoho. (My notes from last quarter are still going to be up in the old format, but if you click on Class Notes, (on the right too,) you'll see it looks different. That's how Zoho looks.

Free SMSing...

Say you're in a coffee shop, and you're doing a project with a bunch of other students who aren't near their laptops and can't get any urgent e-mails from you. How do you send an important message? You could just send an SMS; but what if your phone was left in your car for two days? What then?

Here's a site that lets you send SMSs for free. I just used it. It works great. Just a head's up if you're using it: You need to identify who you are.

Also, here's another one if you like variety, but I haven't tried it.

On-line sources...

I'm a big fan of the Wikipedia, but it's famous for having bias issues. Here's a pretty good example. It's from a podcast so it'll open your iTunes program.

Free music...

I'm not sure if you notice the news ticker on the side, but I tend to put a lot of stories on there about the Recording Industry Association of America, (RIAA.) They're the people who wait for you to download Johnny B. Goode, then they come to your house and take away not only your money, but the money of your children as well.

Anyway, there are a lot of ways to download music on-line for new artists for free. (I'm a big fan of iTunes Free Tuesday.) If you want a lot of music that isn't new, (say for example, The Smiths Greatest Hits,) you can still get it for free. It's neat because it's still a gray area of the law.

Go to the library.

Nobody seems to know about this, but most libraries have whole, well, libraries, of music. If you live near a big city, it's really easy to do. (College campus libraries tend to have good music collections too.)

Free Will Ferrell event in February

I usually don't read the OSU student organization newsletter, but I just did because I have all this free time (!) and found out that comic genius Will Ferrell is coming to Columbus! In the spirit of being cheap and appreciating the multilayered awesomeness of Will's sense of humor, I am reveling in the FREE nature of the tickets to the following event...

OUAB presents: WILL FERRELL in his Funny or Die Comedy Tour

With guests Zach Galifianakis, Nick Swardson & Demetri Martin

February 6, 2008
Value City Arena

In April 2007, Ferrell launched "Funny or Die," a streaming video website where short comedy films are uploaded and voted on by users. The site features the popular “The Landlord” skit starring Ferrell, Funny or Die co-founder Adam McKay and McKay’s 2-year-old daughter Pearl. Will Ferrell is an Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated American comedian, actor and writer who first established himself as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, and has since gone on to a successful film career. Most well-known for his performances in recent movies including Blades of Glory, Anchorman, and Elf, the comedian has over 30 film credits to his name.

OUAB will be distributing 12,000 FREE tickets beginning Monday, January 14th at 5pm at the Ohio Union Information Desk. It is ONE ticket per current Columbus campus student BuckID. BuckIDs will also be scanned at the door on the day of the event.

Faculty, staff, and regional campus students are not eligible for the free tickets, however they can purchase tickets beginning this Friday, Dec. 7 at 10AM at the Schottenstein Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Charge at 614-431-3600 or online at ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $37.50.

Please contact ouab@osu.edu with any questions.

Do you know anyone else who uses a Mac and being a PC user, you're jealous? Is it solely because Mac users get stickies? Well, here's a free stickies program for you Windows users.

Here's a link to the recording of the NURS 703 review session. It's not complete.
